Jazzhus Montmartre presents their festival programme
24/04
This friday Jazzhus Montmartre presented their full line-up for this summer’s Copenhagen Jazz Festival. Visitors can look forward to a programme full of collaborations between some of the best Danish and international jazz musicians.
The highlights of the programme are many. Among them are no less than three shows with American jazz giant Mulgrew Miller (picture). Miller started his career as pianist in Art Blakey’s famous Jazz Messengers and has since played in a number of different outfits, among them Woody Shaw’s and Tony Williams’ Quintets. On July 9 Miller performs as a duo with Danish bass player Jesper Lundgaard, on July 10 Alex Riel joins Miller and Lundgaard on drums making the duo and trio, and on July 11 Copenhagen-based English trumpeter Gerard Spencer joins the trio making it a quartet and thus finishing this three stage jazz rocket.
On July 7 Belgian guitarist Philip Catherine, known for his collaborations with NHØP and Larry Coryell, takes the stage along with Danish pianist Carsten Dahl. A duo of guitar and piano is a rare thing in jazz, but when two musicians as skilled as Catherine and Dahl meets, good things are sure to happen. The following night, on July 8, Danish bass player Bo Stief presents a brand new project entitled “This is where we live” focusing on the themes Copenhagen, Denmark and the enrichment brought to the Danish music scene by immigrating musicians from other parts of the world. For this special occasion Bo Stief has brought in the young Norwegian vocalist Sissel Vera Pettersen.
Like previous years Montmartre will host nightly jam sessions starting at 11 PM and giving the stars a place to meet up and explore new constellations after their shows around the city. The jams will center around American piano talent David Bryant and young Danish jazz lions Jonathan Bremer and Niclas Bardeleben on bass and drums.
