Night jazz all over town during the festival
11/07
In the small hours of the night, when most of Copenhagen Jazz Festival’s 120 venues have closed down for the evening, the jazz music continues in a number of venues around town.
Night Jazz Deluxe at Jazzhouse and Spacelab at CaféScenen
When the concerts at Jazzhouse’s Big Stage in the basement are over, the Small Stage on the ground floor upstairs is host to late night jazz music. This is a chance for the audience to drink the last beer of the evening, or perhaps the first of the night, and settle in for a musical surprise. Last Saturday Brad Mehldau’s drummer Jeff Ballard showed up and played a late duo concert with Swedish Gustaf Ljunggren. At CaféScenen it's possible to catch the funky house orchestra Spacelab with Nikolaj Hess, AC and Mikkel Hess every night at 00.30, except on July 13, where Spacelab is relocated to another of their favorit venues, Small Stage at Jazzhouse.
After Hours Jam at Montmartre
Montmartre has a noble tradition of late night jam sessions. In the 50s and 60s, stars like Dizzy Gillespie, Elvin Jones and Johnny Griffin would pass by Montmartre after they had played concerts around Copenhagen. During Copenhagen Jazz Festival the old jazz house will continue the noble tradition of nightly jam sessions. This year the backbone of the jam sessions consists of a young trio led by the rising American star David Bryant on piano. Together with bassist Jonathan Bremer and drummer Niclas Bardeleben, he provides a strong rhythm section that is ready to support the stars, who might be inclined to kick off the night at Montmartre.
5e and Jazz Club Loco
In the raw but intimate surroundings of 5e in Den Brune Kødby the record label ILK continues their daily jazz experiments into the small hours of the night. Here you will have the chance to listen to drummer Stefan Pasborg in a quartet with saxophonist Lotte Anker and friends Mat Maneri and Cleaver on Friday, July 13th. At the venue Stengade on Nørrebro, Jazz Club Loco will end their Loco Day with midnight concerts every night. Here you can also hear Pasborg in a new and inventive project with guitarist Rune Kjeldsen and DJ Hvad also known as Kid Kishore.
La Fontaine Nights and Lysthuset After Dark
Also, La Fontaine in Kompagnistræde sets the stage for late night jazz concerts every night. The concert series, dubbed La Fontaine Nights, presents alternating orchestras with experienced musicians from the Danish jazz scene. At Islands Brygge, Lysthuset presents late night concerts several nights during the festival titled Lysthuset After Dark. Here it is mainly young up-and-coming musicians who play – for example this year’s winner of Young Jazz, Andromeda.
Apart from the concerts mentioned above, a number of other venues present concerts after midnight, for example Husets Teater, Mojo, Drop Inn, Huset i Magstræde and Kayak Republique.
